Women Lacrosse at HBCU

BALTIMORE,MD- Morgan State women's club lacrosse team competes in its inaugural NCL women's league in Baltimore


According to USA Lacrosse magazine, " Still today there are only five active varsity teams at HBCUs- Delaware State women, Howard women, UDC, men and women and Hampton men.


" In a sport that still has a predominantly white playing population, HBCU lacrosse programs are starting to pick up steam once again, " said by USA Lacrosse.


Next Collegiate Lacrosse released a statement on February 27th announcing a major change in their league.


" In a historic move that's set to redefine the landscape of collegiate sports, the Next Collegiate League(NCL) is proud to announce the inception of its women's division , launching in the league's thrilling third season."


The teams that will be competing in the womens division on NCL are Hampton, Morgan State, Coppin State, Norfolk State, and University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Morgan State Women's lacrosse team won their first two games in their season beating Coppin State and Bowie State in blowout fashion outscoring their opponents 25-7.


Shawn Celio, head coach of the Morgan State Women's club lacrosse spoke about the impact and the future of women's lacrosse at Morgan.


"When you play as a team and have success and you have fun that becomes contagious, "said Celio, after the Bowie State game on March 31st.


"So people watching on TV also to being role models, the future generation they see how the game is play you play with intensity," said Celio.

The Lady Bears club lacrosse team has been racking up wins and finished second in the league after Hampton Pirates finished the season undefeated.



Breanna Summers, a junior at Morgan State University, speaks the challenges that they faced and how they overcame the adversity.


"People are going to want to see that challenge and we faced that challenge and at first we were nervous but the moment we got on that field we were super excited that we were able to be apart of that challenge and we accepted it and we did good," said an excited Summers.


As the regular season of the 2024 NCL women's lacrosse season has come to a close. Morgan State will be headed off the the championship and are hoping that the men's side can win the championship back to back.
